Schalke 04 vs Real Madrid Preview: Bundesliga Returnees Face a Major Pre-Season Test

Schalke 04 will welcome Real Madrid to the Veltins-Arena on Sunday, 16 August, in one of the standout pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The match will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of Schalke's home stadium, which officially opened in August 2001. For the newly promoted Bundesliga side, it will be their final warm-up before facing Hallescher FC in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

Schalke Face Their Toughest Pre-Season Challenge

Schalke enjoyed a strong run during their summer preparations, recording four consecutive victories against Erzgebirge Aue, Metalist Kharkiv, Fagiano Okayama and Hessen Kassel.

However, that winning streak ended with a 3-0 defeat against Serie A side Atalanta.

Facing Real Madrid will now provide Miron Muslić's team with an even bigger test, particularly in terms of defensive organisation and their ability to cope with elite-level attacking quality.

Real Madrid Arrive in Good Form

José Mourinho's Real Madrid have also produced encouraging results during pre-season.

The Spanish giants have beaten Alcorcón 1-0, Leganés 4-1, Ferencváros 2-1 and Deportivo de A Coruña 1-0.

Real Madrid will naturally enter the match as favourites, but with both teams likely to rotate their squads, the fixture will be more about fitness, tactical preparation and squad evaluation than the final score.

A Fixture With Champions League History

Schalke and Real Madrid have previously met four times in the UEFA Champions League.

One of their most memorable encounters came in March 2015, when Schalke stunned Madrid with a 4-3 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real still progressed 5-4 on aggregate, but the result remains one of Schalke's famous European performances.

Several notable players have also represented both clubs, including Raúl, Mesut Özil and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
