Bundesliga September 5-6 Preview: Schalke vs Bayern Munich, Frankfurt vs Augsburg | Predictions & Score Tips

The second matchday of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season features two interesting fixtures, with defending champions Bayern Munich travelling to face newly promoted Schalke 04, while Eintracht Frankfurt host Augsburg.

Schalke 04 vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich could hardly have asked for a better start to their Bundesliga title defence.

Vincent Kompany's side opened the season with an emphatic 5-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart, immediately moving to the top of the table. Even more impressively, Bayern scored five times without Harry Kane registering a goal or an assist, highlighting the attacking depth available to the champions.

Schalke had a much tougher return to Bundesliga football.

The newly promoted side suffered a 3-0 defeat against Augsburg on Matchday 1. Schalke allowed 23 shots and six big chances, although goalkeeper Loris Karius prevented the scoreline from becoming even heavier with 10 saves.

History also strongly favours Bayern. The Munich giants are unbeaten in their last 23 Bundesliga meetings with Schalke, winning 20 and drawing three. Schalke's last league victory over Bayern came back in December 2010.

One of the biggest storylines will be Manuel Neuer's return to the club where his career began. The 40-year-old Bayern goalkeeper came through Schalke's academy and made more than 200 competitive appearances for the club before moving to Munich in 2011.

With Bayern in excellent attacking form and Schalke still adjusting to life back in the top flight, the visitors should be clear favourites.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Augsburg

The second match looks considerably more balanced.

Frankfurt finished eighth last season and have brought back Adi Hütter as head coach, with the Austrian expected to introduce a more attacking and high-intensity style of football.

Young striker Younes Ebnoutalib made an outstanding start to the Bundesliga campaign, scoring a hat-trick from just three shots in Frankfurt's opening match against Union Berlin. He became the club's first Bundesliga hat-trick scorer since Luka Jović in 2018.

Augsburg, however, arrive in Frankfurt with plenty of confidence.

Manuel Baum's side defeated Schalke 3-0 on Matchday 1, their biggest opening-day victory in Bundesliga history. Michael Gregoritsch was again among the key figures, scoring his 36th Bundesliga goal for Augsburg.

Augsburg also enjoyed a strong second half of last season. Only Bayern, Dortmund, Leipzig and Stuttgart collected more points during that period, helping the club finish ninth and secure their first top-half Bundesliga finish in 11 years.

Frankfurt should have more possession at Deutsche Bank Park, but Augsburg's organisation and ability to attack directly could make this a close contest.

Home advantage and Frankfurt's attacking potential give the Eagles a slight edge.
