Bundesliga 2026/27 Rule Changes: New Time-Wasting Measures and Expanded VAR Powers Explained

The Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 are set to introduce several important rule changes for the 2026/27 season, with many of the measures already used during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The main objective is clear: reduce unnecessary delays, improve the flow of matches and give referees greater support in key decision-making situations.

Five-Second Countdown for Goal-Kicks and Throw-Ins

Referees will be able to use a visible five-second countdown when teams are taking too long to restart play from goal-kicks or throw-ins.

If the permitted time is exceeded, a delayed goal-kick can result in a corner being awarded to the opposition. For throw-ins, possession will be handed to the other team.

The change is designed to prevent teams from deliberately slowing down matches, particularly during the closing stages.

Players Must Leave Quickly During Substitutions

Players being substituted will have 10 seconds to leave the field.

If they fail to do so within the allowed time, the incoming substitute will have to wait until the first stoppage after one minute has passed before entering the match.

This gives referees another tool to deal with deliberate time-wasting during substitutions.

One-Minute Rule After On-Field Treatment

Players who receive treatment on the pitch and cause a stoppage must normally leave the field and remain outside for one minute after play restarts.

There are exceptions to the rule, including certain situations involving goalkeepers.

VAR Can Intervene in Second-Yellow-Card Errors

VAR will also receive greater authority from the 2026/27 season.

Video officials will be permitted to intervene when a clearly incorrect second yellow card leads to a player's dismissal.

VAR can also correct cases of mistaken identity where the referee books the wrong player.

There is also a change to advantage situations. If a referee allows play to continue following the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity and the attacking team eventually scores, the offending player will no longer automatically receive the caution that previously applied in such situations.

The changes reflect a wider attempt to increase effective playing time and reduce avoidable interruptions.

With stricter time-management rules and an expanded role for VAR, the 2026/27 Bundesliga season could feature quicker restarts, fewer delays and greater accuracy in major refereeing decisions.
